Iran-US Tensions Drive Over 7% Increase in Oil Market Prices

by admin477351

Amid escalating military tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Saudi Arabia, global oil prices have experienced a significant surge, rising by more than 7%. Brent crude saw an increase of nearly 8%, reaching around $90.75 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbed almost 7% to about $84.76 per barrel. The sharp rise in prices comes on the heels of renewed military exchanges, which have sparked fears of an extended regional conflict that could disrupt global energy supplies.

The situation intensified after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the launch of ballistic missiles targeting U.S. military bases in Jordan. This action was described as a response to recent American military activities. Concurrently, U.S. and Saudi forces executed coordinated strikes on Iran-backed militant positions within Iraq, citing the operation as a strategic move against logistics and weapons sites responsible for ongoing drone attacks on both military and energy infrastructure.

Concerns over maritime security have also heightened as a result of the conflict. The IRGC reported that its naval units had intercepted and attacked three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing them of ignoring navigation warnings. In a separate incident, Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for targeting a Saudi-linked oil tanker in the Red Sea, escalating risks to commercial shipping operations in the region.

The latest developments have amplified fears regarding potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which are crucial transit points for global energy supplies. Market analysts have cautioned that ongoing attacks on shipping lanes and energy infrastructure could maintain elevated oil prices and contribute to increased volatility across global markets.
