As Thailand intensifies its efforts to adopt renewable energy, the nation is witnessing a remarkable surge in solar panel imports. In the first seven months of 2026, imports soared by 88.7% compared to the previous year, reaching a total value of $426.7 million. This substantial increase aligns with Thailand’s strategic initiative to expand solar energy usage across households.
The vast majority of these solar panels, valued at $423.9 million, were sourced from China, which accounted for 99.3% of the imports. This marks a significant year-on-year increase of 107.1% for Chinese imports. Meanwhile, other suppliers like Singapore and Hong Kong contributed marginally, each representing about 0.3% of the total import value.
Central to this surge is Thailand’s forthcoming household solar installation program, aimed at subsidizing solar panel installations by approximately THB 50,000 per household. Initially targeting one million homes, the program has the potential to expand to 1.5 million, reflecting the government’s commitment to reducing household electricity costs and fostering a clean-energy supply chain.
Moreover, the Thai government is exploring measures to bolster domestic solar manufacturing capabilities. Collaboration with the Ministry of Labour aims to develop a skilled workforce for solar panel assembly, installation, and maintenance. Concurrently, discussions with the Board of Investment focus on reducing duties for production inputs that are not locally available, further encouraging domestic solar production.
Through these efforts, Thailand not only aspires to enhance its renewable energy infrastructure but also hopes to stimulate economic growth by creating jobs and reducing reliance on imported energy. The ongoing developments underscore Thailand’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions and its ambition to become a leader in the regional clean energy sector.
