In a significant shift within the aviation sector, Istanbul Airport has surpassed Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest hub, with July passenger numbers revealing the change. Istanbul Airport managed to process 8.15 million travelers during the month, while Heathrow saw 7.86 million. This marks a notable reversal for Heathrow, which experienced a 1.5% decrease in passenger traffic compared to the same period last year. In contrast, Istanbul Airport enjoyed a 2.3% increase in passenger volume.
The dip in Heathrow’s numbers has been partially linked to travel disruptions stemming from ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. This situation has intensified calls for the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s much-debated third runway project. Currently operating with two runways that are nearly at full capacity, the proposed expansion, estimated at £33 billion, aims to boost Heathrow’s annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers, thereby enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism prospects.
Istanbul Airport, which opened its doors in 2018, benefits from a larger site and the advantage of 24-hour operations. It currently features three runways, with a fourth runway scheduled to be operational by the end of 2026. This ongoing development has bolstered its capacity to handle a growing number of passengers, contributing to its recent overtaking of Heathrow in the rankings.
Despite Heathrow’s decline in passenger numbers, other UK airports are experiencing growth. Notably, London Stansted and Manchester airports both reported their busiest July on record, accommodating 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers, respectively. This highlights a broader trend of increasing air travel demand across the UK, even as Heathrow faces challenges related to capacity and infrastructure.
