Meta Faces EU Scrutiny Over Economic Impact of Ignored Mental Health Risks

by admin477351

The European Commission has raised concerns over Meta’s handling of mental health risks linked to the design of its social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram. The Commission alleges that certain features of these platforms, such as autoplay videos, infinite scrolling, and content like reels and stories, are designed in a way that encourages users to spend excessive amounts of time on the platforms, which could potentially lead to compulsive use.

Regulators are particularly worried about the impact of these features on children and teenagers, noting that they might contribute to unhealthy usage patterns, including staying up late at night. The investigation is being conducted under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), a regulatory framework aimed at ensuring online platforms mitigate risks associated with user safety and reducing harmful online behaviors.

European Union officials are advocating for changes to the design of Facebook and Instagram. Proposed measures include setting default limits on autoplay and infinite scrolling, implementing reminders to take screen breaks, and adjusting recommendation algorithms to decrease compulsive engagement. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to promote safer and more responsible use of digital platforms.

In response, Meta has dismissed the preliminary findings, arguing that they have already implemented various measures to protect younger users. These measures include Teen Accounts, parental controls, screen-time limits, and restrictions on nighttime access to the platforms.

Should the European Commission uphold its findings at the conclusion of the investigation, Meta could be subject to significant financial penalties. The potential fines could amount to as much as 6% of the company’s global annual revenue if it is found to have violated the Digital Services Act.
